What is Kutani-Ware
The profound brilliance of Japanese paints
Ceramics produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture. The specialty of this pottery is overglaze enameling with multi-colored paintings. The heavy and beautiful glow of Japanese paints applied in five colors (green, yellow, red, purple, and dark blue) on top of bold and frank line drawings is a distinctive feature of Kutani-yaki.
Kutani ware was born in the early Edo period. During the development of a mine, ceramic stone, the raw material for porcelain, was discovered in the village of Kutani, which was within the territory of the Daishoji clan. He built a kiln in Kutani Village, which became a production center of pottery stones, and thus the name “Kutani-yaki” was born.
The “Aote” technique, which uses an impressive color scheme of green pigments, and the “Iroe” painting technique, which freely utilizes green, yellow, purple, dark blue, and red pigments called “Kutani Gosai,” have been preserved today as masterpieces that are regarded as special among craftsmen and intellectuals.
Today, while using the traditional colors of Kutani ware, many modern designs with cute patterns that match modern lifestyles are also being sold and gaining popularity. Simple Kutani ware made of porcelain with muted colors also looks modern and goes well with today’s style, also easy to match with natural wooden dishes and Scandinavian tableware, and fits in well with both Japanese and Western scenes. Kutani ware enhances your daily dining table with a more delicious taste.
