Author's Comment by Mr. Yoichi Takahashi

Thanks to everyone’s support, “Captain Tsubasa” has reached its 40th anniversary, and in the spirit of returning to the roots, I selected this scene for this artwork. A great “dream” began to unfold as two boys challenged each other in that little town’s soccer field. This artwork has expressed the importance of striving to achieve one’s dreams, which is the central theme of the series.

Carefully selected materials and traditional craftsmanship.

Scenes of Captain Tsubasa that give us many dreams and hopes are created by carefully selected materials and craftsmanship that have been handed down in Japan for hundreds of years.

01

Among the numerous paper-producing regions in Japan, Echizen Washi boasts a rich history of 1500 years with the highest quality and craftsmanship. By faithfully and meticulously following the intricate process with the finest materials, a beautifully smooth washi paper is created. The top-grade, handcrafted washi paper, which complements Kanazawa gold leaf exceptionally well, is used as the canvas.

02

The entsuke gold leaf manufacturing technique, unique to Kanazawa and found nowhere else in the world, was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2020. This technique involves using handmade washi paper to produce entsuke gold leaf, a process that requires a significant amount of time and effort. The hallmark of engraved gold leaf is its breathtakingly beautiful warm radiance which can be observed in the restoration of Japan’s national treasures and important cultural properties, such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Kinkaku-ji.

03

The technique of meticulously and boldly decorating extremely delicate gold leaf, which is about 1/10,000mm thin and can easily fly away with a breath. It requires expert craftsmanship and highly skilled artisans to emboss each one with great care and dedication.

The History and meaning behind the Art of Sensu Fan
In Japan, the term for a fan or sensu has also been referred to as “suehiro”  since ancient times. The word “suehiro” is made from two characters “sue” denoting an end, and “hiro” which is defined as the state expansion. This together denotes that the end is expanding away, symbolizing prolonged prosperity and great fortune. Furthermore, the Japanese word aogu” is associated with creation a breeze by waving a fan, encapsulating our dream to unleashing a fresh breeze of Japanese culture to the world through the creation of this product.
